What is the HORSETAILS 2010® Project?

There is a surprising relationship between music and the horse, one that is often overlooked. String instruments would not exist without the horse's contribution, and without this magnificent creature we would have no orchestras, no fiddles, no string quartets. For centuries, the horse has donated its tail hairs to be strung across the bow, a characteristic unique to string instruments.

The Artwork

Fifty-two artists from around the world were selected to honor in art a select group of equine champions dear to the hearts of horse lovers. Each was given a small-scale violin and bow, and partnered with a special horse to represent in the medium of their choice. Upon completion, each bow was strung with tail hairs from that particular horse, then mounted and framed. The result is fifty-four works of art that make up HORSETAILS 2010®.
